How Kaiser Ghausi Pursues His Goal To Become a Professional Musician

What grade are you in?

10th grade

When did you enter York Prep?

I entered York Prep in 9th grade.

What do you remember the most about entering York Prep during your first year?

I remember how nerve racking my first day was. My previous school was a small school compared to York, and I was not used to seeing so many students on a daily basis. I was not used to having a locker and figuring out where my classes were, which was extremely confusing. However, as time went by, I got used to all of this and I now love it here.

What clubs/sports do you participate in?

I participate in the Jazz Band, and I do vocal coaching with Mr. Hodges.

Tell us about your interests and hobbies outside of school.

When I come home from school and I have finished my homework, I spend time practicing the piano and my voice. I also listen to a lot of music for fun and to be exposed to as much music as possible. I plan to become a professional musician when I grow up.

What do you do to fulfill your love of music and to reach your plan of becoming a musical artist?

I write a lot of music. Usually, the melodies and the chord progressions come first, but there have been times where I’ve come up with lyrics very quickly due to a strong emotion that I want to express through a song. Like I said before, I try to expose myself to as much music as possible so I can have a sense of what a quality song consists of. I mainly like to focus on pop music so that I can understand what sells and what doesn’t sell in the music business. I plan to get an internship at a recording studio. I feel like this would be a great start towards my musical career.

What has been your best memory here at York?

My best memory at York was when I gave my first vocal performance at the Winterlude showcase in December. I was so nervous because I hadn’t played for an audience as big as York before and I was shocked to see so many people there.

If you could give yourself advice as a student entering York, what would it be?

Focus on making true friends. They will stick with you in the end.
